A move refers to the complete transfer of the contents of a home to another. This operation involves both logistics (sorting, packing, transportation) and administrative procedures (notice period, address change, energy contracts). Successfully moving without stress relies less on the amount of accumulated advice and more on adhering to a precise schedule tailored to each contractual and family situation.

Notice and contractual schedule before the move

Most guides start with packing boxes. However, the real starting point lies in the rental contract. For an unfurnished rental, the tenant’s notice period is generally three months, with cases allowing for a reduced notice of one month. In furnished rentals, the rules differ. Checking the reason for departure and properly notifying the landlord can prevent paying rent beyond the actual moving date.

This contractual schedule conditions everything that follows. If the notice period is three months, the sorting and quote-seeking phase begins as soon as the registered letter is sent. If the notice is reduced to one month, every week counts double. Building a reverse schedule from the end date of the lease (and not from the moving day) allows for setting the right priorities at the right time.

For homeowners, the constraint is different: the moving date often depends on the signing at the notary, which can delay the entire organization by several weeks. Anticipating a buffer period between the sale and moving in prevents ending up with furniture on the sidewalk and nowhere to put it.

Additionally, those who wish to discover moving services on Place A will find providers listed according to the type of project and the volume to be transported.

Sorting and volume estimation: the most underestimated lever

The volume of items to be transported directly determines the cost of the move. Every additional cubic meter increases the quote, whether for the size of the truck, the number of movers involved, or the loading time. Sorting before packing, and not during, represents the main lever to reduce the bill.

An effective sort does not consist of opening every drawer on box day. It is done room by room, over several days, by separating items into three categories:

  • What goes to the new home, without hesitation (furniture used daily, items with clear sentimental or functional value)
  • What can be sold, given away, or recycled (clothes not worn for over a year, replaced appliances, books already read with no intention of rereading)
  • What must be thrown away or taken to the dump (broken items, stored “just in case” for years, unusable bulky items)

This step produces a concrete effect: it decreases the volume declared to the mover, which reduces the number of boxes needed and speeds up packing. A serious sort can shift a move from a large-capacity truck to a more compact vehicle.

Packing boxes and protecting fragile items

Packing deserves a method, not just bubble wrap. Each box should have a label indicating the destination room and a brief description of the contents. This labeling saves considerable time on unloading day, especially when several people are involved.

For fragile items (dishes, frames, electronic devices), individual wrapping in newspaper or kraft paper remains more reliable than bulk filling with bubble wrap. Each item must be secured so it does not move inside the box. Empty spaces are filled with linens, which avoids the need to buy additional packing materials.

Some technical principles to follow:

  • Heavy boxes (books, tools) in small formats, to remain portable without risk of tearing the bottom
  • Light but bulky boxes (linens, cushions) in larger, stackable formats
  • A “first night” box prepared separately, containing sheets, towels, chargers, toiletries, and items to prepare a simple meal
  • Dismantled furniture with its screws stored in a bag taped directly to the main piece

Address change and transfer of energy contracts

The administrative aspect of the move is handled in parallel with logistics, not afterward. The address change can be declared online to several public organizations in a single operation, via the online service provided by the French administration. This process covers social security, taxes, and other organizations, but not all: the bank, home insurance, and employer must be notified separately.

The transfer of an energy contract does not work like a simple address change. It is necessary to close the contract linked to the old home and open a new one at the new address. A meter reading at departure and another at arrival allows for billing the actual consumption and avoiding disputes. This step should be planned at least two weeks before the move to ensure service activation on moving day.

For families, moving also involves notifying the school or daycare, updating the vehicle registration, and, if applicable, registering on the electoral rolls of the new municipality. Compiling all these tasks into a single list, checked off as completed, avoids forgetfulness that turns into administrative follow-ups several months later.

A move is better prepared when each step is addressed in the order dictated by the contract, not in the order suggested by perceived urgency. The notice sets the tempo, sorting sets the budget, packing sets the pace for D-day, and administrative tasks close the loop. Missing one of these sequences delays all the following ones.
